Aire Crossing Ceilidh Band

West Yorkshire, Ilkley, Bradford, Leeds, Skipton

Rob Baker - Caller and Melodeon

Rob has called dances for various bands for over 20 years. He also sometimes likes to pick up his melodeon and play a tune or two. His ambition is to learn to do both simultaneously - that's call and play, not pick up and play.

Rob has also been dancing with Leeds Morris Men for over 20 years (not continuously, though sometimes it feels like it) and has played the melodeon with the wonderful Briggate Morris for nearly 10 years.

A Bob Dylan fan for over 50 years he particularly likes those rare arrangements that subtly introduce an accordion (e.g. Auggie Myers on Red River Shore, Dom Cortese on Joey).

Tricia Kyte - Piano Accordion and Caller

Tricia plays accordion and doubles as a caller when the opportunity arises.

Between herself and Rob there is plenty of scope for a variety of dances. A music teacher and leader of community choirs, Tricia is never far away from music.

She also calls ceilidhs for a Leeds-based youth group, helping to encourage the next generation of performers.

Jane Siney - Fiddle

Jane is the fiddle player of the band. Having moved to Leeds to train as a teacher nearly 30 years ago, she considers Yorkshire her home and when not working or playing music, enjoys nothing more than to walk in the Dales and can always track down a cake-serving tearoom when refreshment is needed.

Jane has played the violin since she was in primary school, and learned to play folk fiddle several years ago at The Yorkshire Fiddle School, run by Robin Shepherd and Tom McConville. Jane also plays the flute and viola in some local orchestras (but not at the same time!)

The fiddle that Jane plays is made by Benjamin Ross of Ross Violins, based in Little Neston on the Wirral.

Jennie Johnson - Bass Guitar, Whistle and Acoustic Guitar

Jennie began learning the guitar in the 80's - and joined the Essex Guitar Orchestra. Having moved to Yorkshire, she maintained her interest in the guitar attending Blues sessions run by the great Roger ‘Blues from the Bradford Delta’ Sutcliffe.

Cathy Smith – Melodeon

Cathy first went to a ceilidh on the Isle of Arran in Scotland at the age of 14 and has been hooked ever since. She has been a Morris dancer and melodeon player for many years and has passed on her love of music and dancing to many children.

She also enjoys playing a variety of other instruments, whistle, clarinet and steel pans and her dreams include learning to play the saxophone and to ride a Harley-Davidson (hopefully not at the same time!).

Roy Johnson - Acoustic Guitar and Tenor Banjo

Roy has a keen interest in folk and acoustic music with early musical interest centering on song writers and guitarists such as Don McLean, Ralph McTell and Martin Simpson.

An interest in celtic music developed when Roy moved to Yorkshire and attended traditional music sessions run by the Ilkley Music Centre. Since then Roy has played Acoustic Guitar and Tenor Banjo in a number of local bands including Buttered Peas, Impromtu and Cup ‘n’ Ring.

During the day Roy teaches Guitar, Tenor and Bluegrass Banjo from his home in Ilkley.

Roy plays an acoustic guitar made by Nick Scott in Chesterfield and a Deering Deluxe Tenor Banjo.
